The Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has allowed the early release of convict Manu Sharma on the recommendation of the Sentence Review Board (SRB).
Manu Sharma Jessica Lal Murder case (1999) convict, whose life sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. He was sentenced for life in 2006 by Delhi HC for the murder of model Jessica Lal On 12th May, Monday he has been released from the Tihar jail on grounds of good behavior.
In November 2019, Sharma’s lawyer Amit Sahni had approached the Delhi High Court seeking his release. In his plea, he said that despite spending 23 years in jail and a record of good conduct in prison, the SRB denied his client’s release on four separate occasions in an “unfair and unlawful manner.’' The appeal to release Manu Sharma from jail was made five times before the committee, but every time got rejected. As the convict approached with a new appeal, the Tihar Jail Administration, Delhi Police, and Jessica Lal’s family members did not raise any objection to release Manu Sharma from jail and thus the Delhi HC asked the board to consider Sharma’s case for release.
