The former First Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as the 14th Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on 6th August, 2020 by the President of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind.
Murmu will be assumed as the CAG from the date he assumes charge of his office and is appointed as per the provisions of Article 148 Clause (1) of the Constitution of India which deals with the appointment of the CAG of India.
His appointment was confirmed by a tweet from the Press Information Bureau, Odisha with the notification that was issued by the Ministry of Finance.
Murmu had resigned from the post of First Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on 5th August, 2020 and was appointed as the CAG on 6th August, 2020.
He is an Indian Administrative Officer (IAS) of the 1985 batch of Gujarat cadre and is a former Special Secretary in the Revenue Department.
His appointment comes in time with the upcoming retirement of the current CAG Mr. Rajiv Mehrishi who will be turning 65 on 8th August, 2020.
He was the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and will be replaced by BJP veteran leader Manoj Sinha.
