SUPREME COURT REPROACHED VARIOUS STATE GOVERNMENTS REGARDING THE TREATMENT OF CORONA-VIRUS PATIENTS


On the 12th day of June this year, the Supreme Court of India reproached the state governments and hospitals for the way the dead bodies of the COVID-19 patients are being handled and disposed. The bench comprising of Justice MR Shah, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice SK Kaul stated that the way the bodies are being disposed is even worse than how the dead bodies of stray animals end up as some bodies has even been found in the garbage.

Recently, a letter was also addressed by Dr Ashwani Kumar (Former Union Law Minister and Senior Advocate) to the CJI Justice SA Bobde in which he mentioned how the mistreatment of the dead bodies is an infringement of their Right to die with dignity.

A notice has also issued by the Supreme Court to the Governments of Delhi, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra seeking in-depth status reports from the states. The next hearing regarding the same will be on 17th June 2020.
